VINIA TSOPELAS, piano

Born in Athens and currently a Professor of Piano at the University of Macedonia in Thessaloniki, Vinia Tsopelas is widely regarded as one of Greece’s leading musical figures. In addition to performances in all the major Greek cities, she has toured many other European countries as well as the United States where she has given acclaimed concerts at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall in New York, Ambassador Auditorium in Los Angeles, and the National Gallery in Washington, D.C., among others. “Here is an artist, not just another technician” (San Francisco Chronicle). “She belongs in a class with other relentless, strong pianists, like Lazar Berman” (The Los Angeles Times).

NAREK HAKHNAZARYAN, cello     NOREEN POLERA, piano

Narek Hakhnazaryan was launched onto the international scene after winning the Gold Medal at the 2011 Tchaikovsky International Cello Competition in Moscow. Born in Armenia and educated at the Moscow Conservatory and the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, he has already performed in venues such as Carnegie Hall in New York, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Salle Pleyel in Paris, Wigmore Hall in London, Konzerthaus in Vienna, and Konzerthaus in Berlin. Hailed as a “seasoned phenomenon” (The Washington Post) and praised for his “intense focus and expressive artistry” (The New York Times), he was recently invited to join the prestigious BBC New Generation Artists Scheme.

This concert marks the debut performance of a newly formed chamber music ensemble comprised of clarinetist Miles Ishigaki, cellist Thomas Loewenheim, and pianist Andreas Werz, all music professors at California State University, Fresno. Educated at prestigious institutions including the University of Oklahoma, Indiana University, and the Freiburg Conservatory in Germany, these three colleagues have been active with great success as performers, pedagogues, competition jurors, and recording artists in North and South America, Europe, and Asia.
